Objectives:To date, the European Commission has placed a strong emphasis in positioning the EU as the world’s ‘strong arbitror’ capable of taming big tech companies on multiple regulatory fronts. The adoption of multiple regulations is at the core of the European political agenda to remain relevant in the ongoing geopolitical tech race between China and the United States (US).With the European and US elections taking place in 2024, one fundamental question is whether the existing regulatory agenda will reinforce the future of Europe globally, or to the contrary, whether it will render the EU even more insular from a technological perspective. In a dynamic digital economy where innovation drives competition, and where scale is key, the reconciliation of pro-competitive policies with micro-economic regulatory policies has become central to the success of bringing about geopolitical power, economic growth, and the promotion of democratic values. In this session, we will discuss the future of the EU through a global regulatory lens; and analyze what elements might be relevant for the next European Commission to take into account when designing its political agenda.
